What tools should I carry on a 3000 mile ride?

This section is for discussing Honda related tech info. It doesn't matter what Honda it is, or if it is a chopper, bobber, or a stocker!

What tools should I carry on a 3000 mile ride?

Postby KracKerZaK on Mon Feb 23, 2009 6:42 pm

My name is KracKerZaK, I'm kind of a new rider and I recently acquired a 1985 Honda Shadow VT700. It's been chopped and is a very good runner. BUt I am planning on a round-a-bout trip from Washington to the Grand Canyon to Cottonwood to Vegas to Sacramento and then home, and I have to do all this in a rather short period of time. ( It might not happen quite in that order but I'm determined to prepare for it anyway) alot can happen between here and there and I don't want to get caught un-prepared. I'm curious if anybody knows what usually goes out first on these things and what tools I should carry to be on the safe side. the bike only has 18,000 miles on it and like I said it is a stong runner. pretty much I'm open to any and all suggestions from anybody and everybody. I'm hoping to learn everything I can before I get on the long roads ahead. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thank for your suggestions if you posted them.

RTP,

OK,
on the early Honda's, hell, all the Honda's, the Regulator/Rectifier is the weak spot in the charging system. I've had a 1998 Spirit 1100 for five years and have to replace it 3 times until I found the Rick's Cycle Electric unit, and I swear by it! When I replace any stator, rotor, or reg/rec, I use Rick's, and when I upgrade a CB750(my passion), I demand that they use a Rick's Reg/rec part. I know it will last, and they have a warranty that will back it up!

Anyway, on your bike, replace the charging system, and all should be good. those are good bikes and are built to last. Is yours a shaft drive with drum brakes? With the year and make , it should be. Anyway, change the final drive fluid and clean out the dust on the final drive drum brake. I have only seen two drums destroyed in use and both of those were because of severe abuse and neglect! Chances are your drum and shoes are good.

Got a problem, drop me a line!
Mike
